ILOILO — Residents of Barangay Calaparan can now turn their plastic waste into something that grows. The city's General Services Office, in partnership with the Beautification Program, launched the Bottle to Bounty initiative during the Atipan-on-the-Move activity on October 2, 2026.
A Simple Trade for a Greener City
The concept is straightforward yet powerful. For every two kilograms of PET bottles collected, residents receive a fruit-bearing tree seedling in return. This exchange encourages proper waste segregation while promoting tree planting and environmental stewardship across the community.
The initiative transforms discarded plastic into a resource for urban greening. Rather than ending up in landfills or waterways, the bottles are collected for recycling. In exchange, families take home a seedling that will eventually provide shade, fruit, and cleaner air.
How the Program Works
Participants simply gather their clean PET bottles and bring them to designated collection points during Atipan-on-the-Move activities. The bottles are weighed, and once the two-kilogram threshold is met, the resident chooses a fruit-bearing seedling. The variety may include mango, guava, or other locally suitable fruit trees.
This mechanics ensures that the program benefits both the environment and the household. The plastic is diverted from waste streams, while the seedling offers long-term value. It is a small action with a lasting impact on the community and the planet.
Expanding to More Barangays
Following the successful launch in Barangay Calaparan, the program will visit Barangay Calumpang in Molo next. The city government plans to rotate through different barangays to reach more residents. Each stop brings the opportunity for more families to participate.
The expansion reflects the city's commitment to inclusive environmental programs. By bringing the initiative directly to neighborhoods, the GSO ensures that participation is accessible to all. Residents do not need to travel far to exchange their recyclables for seedlings.
Encouraging Waste Segregation
The Bottle to Bounty program reinforces the importance of waste segregation at the household level. When residents separate PET bottles from other trash, they contribute to a cleaner waste stream. This practice reduces the volume of garbage sent to landfills and supports recycling efforts.
Proper segregation also prevents plastic from clogging drainage systems and polluting waterways. By making the connection between individual actions and community outcomes, the program fosters a culture of responsibility. Every bottle collected represents a step toward a cleaner Iloilo City.
A Community Effort
The success of the launch in Barangay Calaparan would not have been possible without the active participation of residents and barangay officials. Their support demonstrates the community's readiness to embrace sustainable practices. The city government expressed heartfelt gratitude for their involvement.
Such initiatives thrive when the community takes ownership. The Bottle to Bounty program is not just a government project; it is a shared endeavor. Together, residents and officials are nurturing a greener future for Iloilo City.
