ILOILO — The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6 will host the MMK 2.0 Advocacy Run on September 26, 2026, at SM City Iloilo. The free community fun run aims to promote coastal water protection and marine fisheries conservation.
A Run for Cleaner Waters
The event, dubbed Takbo para sa Malinis at Masaganang Katubigan, forms part of BFAR's broader MMK 2.0 initiative. Registration is free, making it accessible to families, friends, and running enthusiasts of all fitness levels. Organizers will announce detailed registration procedures through official BFAR Region 6 channels.
Participants can choose from 1K, 3K, and 5K distance categories, catering to beginners and seasoned runners alike. The early morning start at 5:00 AM encourages the community to come together in support of a meaningful environmental cause. The event seeks to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding the country's aquatic resources.
Part of a Larger National Program
The run supports the National Search for Outstanding Coastal and Inland Communities under the Malinis at Masaganang Katubigan program. BFAR National Director Elizer Salilig emphasized that local government units and communities play a crucial role in protecting the aquatic environment.
The expanded program now includes inland fisheries and freshwater resources, promoting an integrated, ecosystem-based approach to resource management. It also strengthens efforts against climate change and environmental degradation while addressing increasing demands on water resources.
Recognition and Incentives for LGUs
Winning local government units will receive national recognition plaques and substantial financial grants to support fisheries and environmental initiatives. National champions will receive ₱5 million, while special awards will recognize outstanding performance in specific areas of fisheries and aquatic resource management.
The program follows a three-year implementation cycle aimed at sustaining engagement and strengthening LGU capacities. The first year focuses on information, education, and communication campaigns and capacity-building activities. The second year features the search for outstanding coastal fisheries municipalities and cities, while the third year focuses on inland fisheries.
