PHILIPPINES — The Philippines is taking the lead in a regional movement to prioritize health and well-being, anchoring this effort at the upcoming Health and Wellness Confex (HWONFEX) 2026. The summit aims to bridge the gap between the tourism and wellness industries to improve lives across Southeast Asia.
A Regional Summit for People-Centered Growth
The Department of Social Welfare and Development has officially endorsed the expo, aligning it with the country's 2026 ASEAN chairship. DSWD Undersecretary Atty. Adonis Sulit emphasized that the well-being of citizens is central to regional stability and productivity. He noted that true wellness is deeply connected to living conditions such as food security and quality education.
Sulit described HWONFEX as a vital platform for governments and private sectors to collaborate. It allows for the exchange of innovations that advance the well-being of the ASEAN citizenry. The summit creates an environment where partnerships can form to support healthier communities across the bloc.
Wellness as a Travel Experience
The event represents a major shift in how the region views tourism. Former Department of Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo explained that the goal is to position the region as a world-class destination for health and graceful aging. Modern travelers are increasingly seeking vacations that combine fitness, healthy cuisine, spa treatments, and authentic cultural rest.
This integration of hospitality and wellness directly responds to evolving consumer demands. By serving as a bridge for these industries, the summit ignites a movement encouraging Filipinos to actively manage their health. It unlocks high-value economic opportunities while elevating the entire tourism sector.
A Trillion-Dollar Opportunity
Data from the Global Wellness Institute highlights the massive potential of this sector. The global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024, doubling in size since 2013. All eleven sectors have fully recovered from the pandemic, with mental wellness leading the fastest-growing segments.
Dr. Hernando Delizo of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry sees this as a crucial opportunity. The country can connect its local products and services directly to international consumer expectations. This demand-driven approach aims to cater to an aging global population while driving investment into the wellness value chain.
Shifting Focus to Prevention
The Department of Health has also expressed strong support for this movement. Undersecretary Emmie Liza Perez-Chiong emphasized that the future of health lies in empowering individuals to make healthier choices. A strong wellness economy complements national efforts to reduce disease and build resilient populations.
This preventive approach aligns with global trends prioritizing mindfulness and lifestyle modification. By focusing on overall quality of life, the Philippines is building healthier communities. The summit, scheduled for September 4-6 at SMX Convention Center Manila, aims to make this vision a reality for all.
