DAVAO CITY — Two international evaluators from UNESCO are conducting a five-day validation mission across the Mount Apo volcanic complex, assessing the country's bid to make the mountain a global geopark. If approved, Mount Apo would become the Philippines' second UNESCO Global Geopark after Bohol Island.
A Milestone in the Making
The evaluation team consists of Dr. Guy Martin Martini of France and Chenggong Zhang of China. They arrived in Davao City on August 16 to begin their on-site assessment. The mission covers conservation efforts, educational programs, and sustainable community-led development across the 640-square-kilometer protected area.
The formal application was jointly submitted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional offices XI and XII. Initial preparations began in 2022, culminating in the official bid for international recognition. A final decision from UNESCO is expected by 2027 after the evaluation cycle concludes.
