ILOILO — More than 1,400 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from across the province gathered at Punta Villa Resort on September 2, 2026, for the opening of the 4th Provincial Barangay Nutrition Scholars Convention. The grassroots health volunteers marked their dedication through a symbolic "Tree of Commitment" ceremony.
A Pledge for Community Wellness
The Tree of Commitment ceremony served as a powerful visual representation of the scholars' shared mission. Each participant pledged to work toward building a greener and healthier community for Ilonggo children and mothers. This act of unity underscored their vital role in grassroots health delivery.
The two-day convention focuses on sharpening the skills of these volunteer workers. It aims to strengthen their capacity to serve their respective barangays effectively. The gathering recognizes the indispensable contribution of BNS to the province's health system.
The Unsung Heroes of Barangay Health
A Barangay Nutrition Scholar is primarily tasked with identifying and tracking malnourished children through the annual Operation Timbang Plus. Mandated by Presidential Decree No. 1569, Iloilo relies on a network of over 1,700 BNS. These volunteers connect mothers and children to essential healthcare services at the community level.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon emphasized the BNS' indispensable contribution. She said that behind every successful nutrition program is often a BNS quietly working behind the scenes. They visit homes, talk to mothers, monitor children, and encourage families to adopt healthy practices.
Holistic Development Through Environmental Care
Vice Governor Lee Ann Debuque highlighted that the provincial government's programs extend beyond nutrition. The initiatives aim to foster the holistic development of children. This is grounded in the belief that protecting the environment also means safeguarding vital food sources.
Debuque, who chairs the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Health, underscored the vital role of BNS in ensuring optimal care. She expressed the province's desire for all young children to be healthy. The goal is for them to confidently grow, learn, and enjoy their childhood.
Capacity-Building for Frontline Workers
The convention featured a series of capacity-building sessions tailored for the participants. Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Wendel Marcelo highlighted the critical role of BNS in safeguarding maternal nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life. This period is crucial for a child's lifelong health and development.
In the afternoon, soft skills management expert Rowena Diaz led a talk on personality development and professional excellence. Dr. Catherine Jane Loking Eraldo facilitated a discussion on fostering mental wellness and resilience. Miagao Municipal Health Officer Dr. Rhea Palacios presented strategies for making nutrition services more inclusive.
Strengthening Food Production and Community Resilience
Iloilo City Agriculturist Iñigo Garringalao discussed strengthening local food production. His talk connected this to bolstering nutrition security and building greener communities. This holistic approach ensures that health programs are supported by sustainable local resources.
The BNS Convention received support from various government agencies. Representatives from the Department of Health Western Visayas and DILG Iloilo Province attended. The Federation of Provincial Nutrition Volunteers of Iloilo, Inc. also lent its support.
