BACOOR CITY, CAVITE - provided immediate food and livelihood support to 3,677 local fisherfolk on August 25, 2026, at the S.T.R.I.K.E. Gymnasium within the Bacoor Government Center, recognizing their vital role in the city's food supply and economy. The relief distribution, led by Mayor Strike B. Revilla, came during a period when continuous rains from the southwest monsoon (Habagat) prevented fisherfolk from going out to sea, leaving them without income and access to food.
Relief Distribution and Key Partners
The City Government of Bacoor, through its Office of Agricultural Services, the Bacoor Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the City Social Welfare and Development Office, organized the distribution of relief goods to fisherfolk from across the city. The Department of Social Welfare and Development provided the relief packs, ensuring that the assistance reached those who needed it most.
The distribution was attended by Vice Mayor Rowena B. Mendiola, Board Member Alde Pagulayan, Councilor Karen Sarino Evaristo, BDRRMO Head Richard Quion, and City Agriculture Office Head Allan Chua. Mayor Strike Revilla has been actively leading the city's disaster response efforts, with the city government previously declaring the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the prevailing weather conditions brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon. The S.T.R.I.K.E. Gymnasium has also served as a central venue for other community initiatives, including the Bacoor Open Dancesport Competition and the distribution of affordable rice under the city's "Bente Pesos na Bigas" program.
Supporting Fisherfolk and the Local Economy
The relief distribution provided immediate food assistance to families who were unable to fish due to the continuous Habagat rains that affected Luzon, including Cavite. As of August 25, PAGASA reported that the southwest monsoon would bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to Cavite and other parts of Luzon, making it difficult for fisherfolk to venture out to sea. The assistance acknowledged the crucial role of the local fisheries sector in Bacoor's food supply and economy, with the city government ensuring that affected fisherfolk received the support they needed during this challenging time.
The relief distribution also comes as fisherfolk groups across Cavite continue to face challenges, including a recent incident where a dredging vessel damaged more than 10 mussel-farming structures in Cavite City. The city government's efforts are part of a broader response to support the fishing community. The Department of Social Welfare and Development has maintained stockpiles of family food packs nationwide to respond to the needs of communities affected by the Habagat and other weather disturbances, with organizations like the One Meralco Foundation also delivering relief packs to affected families in Bacoor and other areas.
