CEBU CITY — Governor Pamela Baricuatro has thrown her full support behind the development of Cebu's bamboo industry, positioning the fast-growing sector as both an economic opportunity and a tool for environmental protection. She made the commitment during the Central Visayas Regional Bamboo Congress 2026 at the Capitol Social Hall on October 15.

A Congress Uniting Cebu and Bohol

The gathering brought together bamboo growers, manufacturers, and businesses from Cebu and Bohol. Asturias Vice Mayor Melvin Labuca, chairman of the Cebu Bamboo Industry Development Council, led the Cebu delegation. Garcia-Hernandez Mayor Jess Baja headed the Bohol contingent.

Discussions centered on the Bamboo and Carbon PH Project, bamboo structures and sustainability, and the industry's role in mitigating climate change. The congress created a venue for stakeholders to align strategies and identify shared solutions. It also opened doors for buyers, training opportunities, and long-term partnerships.

Economic Potential Across the Value Chain

Department of Trade and Industry Region 7 Acting Director Esperanza Melgar highlighted bamboo's economic and environmental potential. She described the industry as a driver of sustainable growth with applications ranging from traditional handicrafts to modern construction and packaging.

Melgar emphasized that building a competitive industry requires support at every step, from farm to market. DTI remains committed to supporting this growth through programs that assist growers, processors, and manufacturers. Her statement reinforced the government's role in nurturing the sector.

Environmental Benefits Beyond Livelihoods

Governor Baricuatro noted that expanding the bamboo industry could strengthen sustainable production and promote climate-resilient development. Bamboo grows rapidly, absorbs carbon efficiently, and stabilizes soil, making it a valuable ally in the fight against climate change.

Beyond environmental gains, the industry could create new markets for bamboo-based products. This includes furniture, textiles, engineered boards, and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Such innovations would position Cebu as a leader in green manufacturing and circular economy practices.

Building a Connected Value Chain

The governor stressed the need to build a value chain that links growers, manufacturers, and businesses. Without these connections, bamboo production risks remaining fragmented and underutilized. A coordinated approach ensures that raw materials reach processors efficiently and that finished goods find viable markets.

"I hope that this congress leads to partnerships and plans that you can act on, a connection with the buyer, opportunity for training, or a shared solution to a problem we have faced for years," Baricuatro said. Her words underscored the importance of translating dialogue into concrete action.

Positioning Cebu as a Green Economy Leader

The congress reflects a broader push to diversify Cebu's economic base beyond traditional industries. By investing in bamboo, the province taps into a renewable resource with growing global demand. Sustainability-focused markets increasingly favor bamboo as a substitute for timber and plastics.

Local government units in Cebu and Bohol are already exploring bamboo as a livelihood source for upland communities. With continued support from DTI and the provincial government, the industry could generate jobs, reduce import dependence, and enhance climate resilience across Central Visayas.
