The City Government of Cavite, led by Mayor Denver Chua and Vice Mayor Raleigh Rusit, partnered with the Inner Wheel Club of Manila Bay-EDSA to launch community development initiatives in Barangay 14. The collaboration brought together essential programs addressing women's welfare, coastal protection, and livelihood support for local fisherfolk.
Empowering Women and Protecting Coastal Communities
The partnership between the City Government of Cavite and the Inner Wheel Club of Manila Bay-EDSA delivered a comprehensive package of community services designed to address both social welfare and environmental needs in Barangay 14. A key component of the initiative was a Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) awareness seminar, which aligns with the city's ongoing commitment to upholding women's rights. VAWC awareness programs are designed to educate participants on the legal framework protecting women and children, particularly Republic Act No. 9262, while promoting a clear understanding of the roles of government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders in addressing such cases .
Funding for women's health services was also provided, building on the city's existing maternal care programs which offer prenatal and post-partum care to mothers in the community . The program also distributed solar-powered headlights to local fishermen. This support comes at a critical time, as the Office of the Vice President has previously extended aid to fisherfolk in Cavite to help them cope with the financial strain caused by rising fuel costs.
The environmental component of the initiative included the planting of 300 mangroves for coastal defense and a joint coastal cleanup drive. Mangrove planting serves a critical purpose, acting as natural barriers to reduce erosion, absorb storm surges, filter pollutants, and provide vital habitats for marine life . The city government has a history of supporting similar environmental efforts, including previous mangrove planting activities in Cavite City that demonstrated significant community turnout and environmental responsibility.
