CAVITE CITY, CAVITE - health officials and barangay leaders held an emergency meeting on September 2, 2026, following a concerning spike in leptospirosis cases in the city. The meeting was called by the Liga ng mga Barangay and the Cavite City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) following directives from Mayor Denver Chua.
A Coordinated Response to a Growing Health Threat
The emergency meeting was led by Liga President Councilor Abraham "Bam" Urubio and brought together all barangay captains to address the rising cases. Dr. Jeffrey Dela Rosa, head of the CESU, formally presented the situation report detailing the increase in infections. The meeting's primary goal was to analyze the causes, symptoms, and prevention methods of the disease to stop its spread within communities .
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that spreads through the urine of infected animals, including livestock, pets, and rodents. The bacteria can survive for weeks to months in fresh water and wet soil, particularly in warm climates . Infection occurs when contaminated water or soil comes into contact with cuts in the skin, or through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Even wading in floodwaters can pose a significant risk . Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, vomiting, and jaundice, and in severe cases (5-10% of infections), the disease can lead to kidney failure, liver failure, and death.
Public Urged to Avoid Floodwaters
Authorities are strongly advising the public to avoid wading in floodwaters, as these waters may be contaminated with the urine of infected animals . The risk of infection is particularly high after heavy rainfall and flooding, especially in urban areas . Cavite City, which is a peninsula with a flat surface and is bounded by Manila Bay, Cañacao Bay, and Bacoor Bay, is susceptible to flooding during the rainy season.
In addition to avoiding floodwaters, health officials recommend wearing waterproof protective clothing and shoes or boots near potentially contaminated water or soil, and covering any cuts or scratches with waterproof bandages .
