MAKATI CITY — The City Government of Makati has taken another significant step toward building resilience against rising temperatures by conducting a three-day Action Planning Workshop for the development of the Makati Extreme Heat Risk Management Action Plan (EHRMAP). Held from August 17 to 19, 2026, at the University of Makati's Health and Physical Science Building, the workshop was led by the Makati Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Makati Climate Change Committee. Building on the earlier Makati AGAP Initiative Orientation held in June 2026, the workshop aimed to translate national guidance into concrete, localized strategies for addressing the growing threat of extreme heat in the city.

A Data-Driven Approach to Urban Heat Resilience

The workshop utilized the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities: Addendum for Extreme Heat Risk Management as its foundation, allowing the city to evaluate its existing heat resilience measures and map out current operational capacities across various sectors. Participants identified sustainable strategies and policy interventions that can strengthen the city's existing programs, projects, and activities. The resulting EHRMAP will guide the development and implementation of future initiatives and support their integration into the Annual Investment Program to ensure sustainable funding and execution. The city also benefited from sharing of international and local evidence-based best practices and solutions, with representatives from Quezon City and Iloilo City presenting their own experiences in addressing extreme heat.

Technical Assistance from the United Nations

The workshop was further enriched by technical assistance provided throughout the three-day activity by Ms. Mutarika "Mai" Pruksapong, Programme Management Officer from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Global Education and Training Institute. The UNDRR's involvement underscores the importance of international collaboration in building local climate resilience and reflects Makati's commitment to aligning its efforts with global best practices in disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation.
