ILOILO CITY — The National Museum of the Philippines Iloilo is inviting visitors to explore
Pinilian weaving as part of Museums and Galleries Month this October. The hands-on activity introduces guests to the traditional art of creating "chosen" patterns from Antique, celebrated for its floating-weft motifs.

A Living Tradition from Antique

Pinilian is a distinctive weaving technique originating from Antique province. Artisans create intricate patterns by inserting supplementary weft threads into traditional patadyong skirts, producing designs that seem to float above the fabric surface. This craftsmanship has been passed down through generations of weavers.

The most popular motif is the sampaguita, a floral design inspired by the jasmine flower. Weavers also explore other patterns including Balay-balay, a geometric motif resembling a traditional nipa hut, and Sungi-sungi, a cross-shaped intersecting design. Each pattern carries cultural meaning and reflects the weaver's creativity.

Exploring Diverse Motifs and Meanings

Beyond the sampaguita and Balay-balay, the tradition includes Kinantong, which features flower petals or petal-like arrangements. The Luzviminda motif stands out as a symbol of unity across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, its intricate design representing the interconnectedness of the archipelago's three island groups.

These motifs demonstrate the depth and versatility of Pinilian weaving. Visitors to the museum can learn how each design is constructed and the stories behind them. Understanding these patterns offers a window into the rich cultural heritage of Western Visayas.

A Step-by-Step Weaving Experience

Participants begin by removing one end of the ribbon from the board. They then weave the ribbon over and under the threads, creating the foundation of their pattern. The next step involves choosing a design, whether following traditional motifs like sampaguita or experimenting with personal creativity.

Weavers continue until their design is complete, securing the ribbon at the end. The process is accessible to beginners while offering depth for those with experience. Museum staff guide participants throughout, ensuring a rewarding creative session for all ages.

Sharing Heritage Through Social Media

Visitors are encouraged to share their finished work on social media using the hashtags #NMPIloilo and #weaveyourheritage. This digital sharing extends the museum's reach and inspires others to appreciate weaving traditions. Every post becomes a small act of cultural preservation.

The activity reinforces the museum's role as a steward of regional heritage. By engaging the public in hands-on learning, NMP Iloilo transforms passive observation into active participation. This approach builds deeper connections between communities and their cultural roots.

Visit and Participate

The museum welcomes guests from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, with a cut-off at 4:30 PM. Entrance is free, making the experience accessible to everyone. Visitors can explore the exhibits and join the weaving activity at no cost.

Whether a seasoned artisan or a curious first-timer, everyone is invited to be creative. The museum encourages families, students, and tourists to participate and celebrate the rich weaving heritage of Western Visayas together.
