PHILIPPINES — The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey reveals a significant decrease in the number of Filipino families experiencing food poverty. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) attributes this positive trend to the effective implementation of government programs aimed at ending hunger.
A Nationwide Decline in Hunger
The SWS survey, conducted from June 20 to 29, 2026, shows self-rated food poverty fell from 42 percent in March to 36 percent in June. This translates to 1.5 million fewer families who now consider themselves food-poor. The number dropped from 11.7 million to 10.2 million over the quarter.
This improvement was consistent across all regions, with Visayas showing the largest decline of nine percentage points. Mindanao, Balance Luzon, and Metro Manila also recorded significant drops. DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao welcomed the data as evidence that their programs are moving in the right direction.
The Walang Gutom Program's Impact
The flagship initiative, Walang Gutom Program (WGP), is credited as a key driver behind this progress. The program provides targeted households with ₱3,000 monthly food credits through electronic benefit transfer cards. These credits can be used to buy nutritious food from accredited retailers.
A separate survey focusing on WGP beneficiaries supports the program's effectiveness. It showed a decline in food poverty among those receiving aid from 79.0 percent to 77.6 percent. In contrast, food poverty among non-beneficiaries slightly increased over the same period, highlighting the program's targeted impact.
Real Stories of Change
For beneficiaries like Evelyn Pimentel, a 53-year-old mother of seven from Masbate City, the program has been transformative. She shared that before WGP, budgeting for food was a constant struggle. Now, she is assured that her family can access complete and nutritious meals despite their financial constraints.
Her story reflects the lived experience of many families who have benefited from the program. The "Go, Grow, Glow" food model ensures that beneficiaries can purchase a balanced diet. This direct intervention is making a tangible difference in the daily lives of the poor.
A Commitment to Continued Progress
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has directed the agency to intensify its anti-hunger efforts. The government acknowledges that while the data is encouraging, millions of families still require support. The focus remains on sustaining and enhancing programs like WGP to reach more of those in need.
The 600,000 households currently served by WGP represent a significant stride, but the mission is ongoing. The DSWD is committed to working with other agencies and partners to ensure that no family is left behind in the fight against hunger.
