GIGAQUIT, SURIGAO DEL NORTE — In the peaceful coastal town of Gigaquit, a centuries-old tradition remains alive; not through museums or written archives, but through the fermentation jars and distillation stills that have been used by local communities for generations. Gigaquit Rum, a spirit produced from fermented nipa palm sap, is more than a local drink. It represents the ingenuity of the Surigaonon people, reflects the mangrove forests surrounding the town's estuaries, and stands as a symbol of a cultural identity that continues to endure.
A Spirit Rooted in Nature and Tradition
The origins of Gigaquit Rum can be traced to the nipa palm groves growing in the brackish waters and seawater estuaries of Barangays Ipil and Villafranca. Local distillers gather sap, locally called tuba, from the cut stalks of semi-mature nipa palm fruit heads. The sap undergoes natural fermentation before being distilled through techniques handed down among Gigaquit craftsmen for at least five generations. The process produces a clear and potent spirit known locally as Laksoy, which is bottled and marketed as Gigaquit Rhum with 40% alcohol by volume. Its distinct flavor is influenced by the area's mineral-rich waters, coastal environment, and the careful craftsmanship of the local distillers.
Protecting Authenticity Through Geographical Indication
In February 2026, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Surigao del Norte made an important move toward preserving this heritage by supporting the proposed Geographical Indication (GI) registration for Gigaquit Rum. A GI provides intellectual property protection to products whose qualities, reputation, or characteristics are connected to their place of origin. For Gigaquit Rum, this protection would help prevent misuse or imitation, preserve its authenticity in the marketplace, and strengthen its identity as a product uniquely associated with Gigaquit. DTI Provincial Director Arnold Faelnar explained that the initiative seeks to recognize and protect the rum's distinctive identity, quality, and reputation, which are closely connected to the area's natural resources, climate, and traditional craftsmanship. The registration is expected to enhance product branding, strengthen market positioning, build consumer confidence, and create greater opportunities for tourism and investment.
From Tradition to Innovation: The DOST Distillery Facility
Efforts to preserve the heritage of Gigaquit Rum are being supported by modern technology and innovation. In 2025, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) established a rum processing facility in Gigaquit through a collaborative initiative involving DOST Caraga, the provincial government of Surigao del Norte, the LGU of Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte State University, and community partners. The facility combines traditional knowledge with modern techniques in rum processing, quality testing, and flavor development, while continuing to draw from Gigaquit's longstanding nipa palm heritage. Bringing together traditional practices and modern methods allows the craft to be preserved while also being further developed, giving Gigaquit Rum an opportunity to reach wider markets without losing its distinctive character.
Why This Matters to Tourism and the Community
For travelers looking for genuine cultural experiences, Gigaquit Rum provides a taste of Surigao del Norte that is closely tied to its place of origin. The product carries a story of mangrove forests, generations of distillers, and a community that has transformed a simple palm resource into a source of pride and livelihood. The proposed GI protection and newly established processing facility also open possibilities for tourism development, giving visitors opportunities to discover the distillation process, interact with local artisans, and experience the region's distinctive flavors. As Gigaquit develops its identity as a center for premium indigenous products, its rum can serve as an entry point for exploring the wider cultural and natural richness of Surigao del Norte.
