More Than a Greeting on the Calendar

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The General Santos celebration gave teachers a chance to receive something tangible alongside the usual messages of gratitude. According to a report published on October 5, the Bobslor Pacquiao Foundation and 1-Pacman Party-list provided a selection of household prizes, including rice cookers, electric kettles, stand fans, blenders, a refrigerator, an LED television, washing machines, and a water dispenser. Teachers also had opportunities to receive rice packs, with 100 packs containing 10 kilograms and another 30 packs containing 25 kilograms. The variety of prizes made the gathering feel less like a formal observance and more like a community occasion designed around the people being celebrated.

Gifts Chosen With Everyday Life in Mind

There is an interesting detail in the way the celebration was organized: many of the prizes were things people can actually use at home. Kitchen appliances, rice, household equipment, and cash are considerably different from symbolic tokens because their value can extend beyond the event itself. Twenty teachers were reported to have received PHP5,000 cash prizes, while another winner received a PHP50,000 grand prize. The combination of household items and financial assistance gave the celebration a distinctly practical character while keeping the focus on appreciation.

A Citywide Thank-You for the People Behind the Lessons

The occasion also fits into the broader National Teachers’ Month observance that began on September 5 and culminated on October 5 with National Teachers’ Day and World Teachers’ Day. The 2026 national celebration carried the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman,” putting attention on teachers after the daily work they do for their learners. In General Santos, that message took a community form through a gathering where educators could relax, participate, and receive tokens of appreciation rather than simply being mentioned in a program. It is a small but meaningful shift in perspective: for one day, the people who usually give their time and attention to others were the ones being invited to enjoy the celebration.
