ILOILO — The Iloilo City Government is set to distribute the second wave of fuel subsidies to public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers and operators tomorrow, August 7, 2026. The program aims to cushion the blow of stubbornly high diesel prices for 1,049 qualified units.

A Lifeline for Jeepney Drivers

The fuel subsidy comes at a critical time for transport workers who have been grappling with fluctuating petroleum costs. Each qualified PUJ unit will receive a coupon that can be redeemed for fuel at designated gas stations over the weekend. The direct assistance helps drivers keep more of their daily earnings while maintaining fares for the riding public.

Mayor Raisa Treñas emphasized that while the subsidy is not a permanent fix, it provides immediate relief. She noted that the city government understands the heavy burden of rising fuel prices on the livelihoods of drivers and operators. The program is part of a broader local strategy to support vulnerable sectors amid global oil price volatility.

Two-Tiered Assistance

The city has structured the subsidy into two tiers based on compliance with the Local Public Transport Route Plan. A total of 877 consolidated units that are part of the modernization program will receive ₱1,500 each. Meanwhile, 172 unconsolidated units will get ₱1,000 each.

The distinction reflects the city’s effort to encourage operators to join the LPTRP, which aims to streamline routes and improve service. All beneficiaries were pre-screened and validated to ensure that only legitimate drivers and operators receive the aid. The transparent selection process helps maintain the program’s integrity.

Orderly Distribution Process

To claim the subsidy, drivers must present two photocopies of their driver’s license, each bearing their original signature. The coupons will be distributed on Friday, August 7, with fuel redemption scheduled for August 8 and 9. Beneficiaries are reminded to strictly follow their assigned time slots and gasoline stations.

The city has coordinated with partner gas stations to handle the volume of redemptions smoothly. Drivers are urged to bring the required documents to avoid delays. This system ensures that the subsidy reaches the intended recipients efficiently and without disrupting fuel station operations.

City’s Commitment to Public Transport

This second tranche builds on previous relief efforts that have covered tricycle and taxi drivers across Iloilo City. The local government has consistently stepped in to shield transport workers from economic shocks. Mayor Treñas reiterated that the fuel subsidy is one of several measures designed to keep the city’s public transport system viable.

By directly assisting jeepney drivers, the city also supports the daily commuters who rely on affordable transportation. The program demonstrates a practical partnership between the local government and the transport sector. As fuel prices remain unpredictable, Iloilo City’s proactive approach offers a model of responsive governance.
