ILOILO — The Iloilo City Government is giving young Ilonggos a stronger voice in governance through the "G Na Youth: G na G sa Public Service" Youth Leadership Training. The initiative aims to boost youth participation and provide a platform for their ideas and solutions for the community.
A New Platform for Young Leaders
The program was formalized on August 12, coinciding with International Youth Day. Mayor Raisa Treñas signed Executive Order No. 084, institutionalizing the initiative. The order strengthens youth empowerment and development across the city.
Mayor Treñas delivered a clear message to the youth: "Indi ko gusto nga ang kabataan mangin subject sang problema—gusto ko nga kamo mismo ang mangin kabahin sang solusyon." Her words emphasize a shift from seeing youth as passive recipients to active problem-solvers. The city is now giving them space for their ideas and voices.
Institutionalizing Youth Participation
The Executive Order marks a formal commitment to youth engagement in local governance. It paves the way for sustained programs that develop leadership skills among young Ilonggos. The city government recognizes that the energy and creativity of the youth are essential for community progress.
Through this initiative, young residents can now more easily present their project ideas. The Mayor's office has committed to being open and supportive of youth-led community projects. This approach builds a culture of collaboration between the government and the next generation.
Youth Associations Thriving
A concrete example of this commitment is the organization of youth associations in relocation and housing communities. Through the Iloilo City Local Housing Office (ICLHO), 27 youth associations have been established. These groups ensure that young residents are active contributors to their new communities.
The goal is not just for young people to live in these areas, but to help improve them. They are seen as partners in making their communities better for everyone. The associations provide a structured way for youth to participate in local decision-making.

The advocacy is supported by key figures, including City Councilor Miguel Treñas and Executive Assistant on Youth Affairs Mcbee Malones. Former National Youth Commission Chair Leon Flores III also joined the effort. Their involvement adds experience and weight to the program.
