ILOILO — The city government opened its first-ever library inside a public market on Friday, transforming a section of the Iloilo Central Market into a vibrant learning space. The Library sa Merkado is located in the dry goods section on the second floor, making books accessible to marketgoers, vendors, and children.
A Library for Young Learners
Mayor Raisa Treñas, who led the opening, said the library is particularly intended for children who accompany their parents to the market. She emphasized the importance of starting them young and helping them discover that reading can be fun. Early exposure to books, she noted, builds strong reading comprehension and a lifelong love for learning.
The library's collection of books and stories aims to spark children's imagination and encourage curiosity. The reading space was donated by the Zonta Club of Iloilo City Inc. and built with assistance from the Technical Institute of Iloilo City. With the opening of Library sa Merkado, Iloilo City now boasts two operational district libraries, eight barangay reading centers, four outdoor libraries in city plazas, and one market-based library. The library initially operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. The city government is considering weekend operations to serve more visitors. The flexible schedule aims to accommodate the busy lives of market vendors and their families.

The Technical Institute of Iloilo City contributed significantly to the library's construction. Their skills were used in fabricating the library door and cabinet, as well as designing and installing decorative decals. Their work gives the space its unique identity and welcoming atmosphere.
