MAKATI CITY — The Department of Environmental Services (DES) of Makati recently conducted a Recyclables Collection activity at the Makati City Hall, drawing participation from 12 city departments and offices. The initiative resulted in the collection of 1,141 kilograms of recyclable materials, valued at PHP 3,512.00, underscoring the city's dedication to sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship. The activity is a key component of the city's ongoing Waste Reduction and Diversion Program, which actively encourages waste segregation and responsible disposal among its residents and government employees.
A Community-Driven Approach to Waste Reduction
The successful collection drive was made possible through a partnership with Orodio Junkshop, one of the city's accredited partner recyclers. This collaboration ensures that collected materials are properly processed and diverted from landfills, maximizing the environmental and economic benefits of the program. The city government and the DES continue to emphasize the importance of proper waste disposal and segregation at the household level, a fundamental practice that supports a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
A Call for Collective Environmental Responsibility
This initiative is part of a broader, year-round commitment by the city to promote ecological awareness. In line with Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, the city government consistently reminds its constituents to practice proper waste segregation and to participate in programs that contribute to a more sustainable future. The city's efforts are complemented by regional programs like the MMDA's "Recyclables Mo, Palit Grocery Ko," which encourages residents across Metro Manila to exchange recyclable materials for essential goods, fostering a culture of environmental participation and community cooperation.
