AJUY, Iloilo — Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. led the official opening of the P130-million Ajuy Business Park on September 10, 2026, a modern three-storey facility designed to serve as the municipality's new public market and primary economic hub. The inauguration coincided with the Ajuy Municipal Fiesta, turning the event into a significant local celebration.
A Modern Market for a Growing Municipality
The new complex spans more than 3,000 square meters and was implemented in three phases. The ground floor is dedicated to local market vendors, while the second floor accommodates commercial enterprises. A roof deck provides a scenic view of the municipality, adding a distinctive feature to the structure.
The project was funded from the municipality's 20 percent development fund. Its completion marks the culmination of years of planning, beginning with a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2023. The old market, which was overcrowded and outdated, has now been replaced by a facility that meets modern standards.
Public Markets as Economic Barometers
Governor Defensor emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of public markets during his keynote message. He described the market as the center of livelihood and local governance, saying that anyone who wants to understand the province's economy should visit a market.
He also shared that he regularly visits public markets himself to purchase goods and assess the real situation of farmers and local producers. His hands-on approach reflects a governance philosophy that values grassroots economic activity and direct engagement with constituents.

Mayor Loida Espinosa described the inauguration as a historic event for the municipality. She said the business park represents the future of Ajuy and the future of its vendors, noting that every stall symbolizes the hard work of local entrepreneurs.

Commitment to Further Development
Recognizing the need for more space, Governor Defensor pledged P41.5 million for the construction of a dedicated wet market building. The new structure will be located at the back of the Business Park and will cater specifically to the produce of local farmers and fisherfolk.
Mayor Espinosa thanked the governor for the assistance, emphasizing that the additional space will benefit agricultural producers. The pledge ensures that the business park will continue to expand and serve the growing needs of the municipality.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vice Mayor Jett Rojas, Board Member Rolex Suplico, DTI Iloilo OIC-Provincial Director Ma. Dorita Chaves, and Iloilo Police Provincial Director Bayani Razalan. Mayor Jon Aying of Sara also showed his support, along with other private sector partners.
