SURIGAO DEL NORTE — The Philippines is home to a destination where the Pacific Ocean forms perfect barrels, mangrove forests stretch across vast landscapes, and warm hospitality flows as steadily as the tide. That destination is Surigao del Norte, a province that has earned its reputation as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines and is now bringing its many attractions together into one compelling invitation to explore.

The Heartbeat of Philippine Surfing

At the heart of this invitation is Cloud 9 in General Luna, Siargao Island, a hollow, right-hand reef break that has become an internationally recognized symbol of Philippine surfing. Its iconic wooden boardwalk extends over the reef, giving visitors a front-row view of skilled surfers riding through the famous barrels. This October, Siargao will once again draw global attention as the World Surf League Championship Tour stages the Philippines Pro at Cloud 9 from October 31 to November 10, 2026, marking the country's first-ever stop on the prestigious global tour. The landmark event is expected to bring elite surfers and surf photographers from across Asia and beyond, creating opportunities for tourism, local enterprises, and employment. In preparation for the international competition, the Cloud 9 Towers are undergoing major rehabilitation through a project spearheaded by the Philippine Sports Commission, together with the provincial and local governments. The improvements include a three-level viewing deck and a solar-powered event space, allowing the venue to meet international standards while reflecting the character and resilience of the local community. Governor Robert Lyndon S. Barbers described the initiative as more than simply rebuilding a structure: "It's about restoring the heartbeat of Siargao and boosting tourism and local livelihoods."

A Province of Diverse Wonders

Surigao del Norte offers far more than world-class waves, with a remarkable combination of natural attractions and cultural experiences. Through its RLSB 2.0 administration, the provincial government is promoting a tourism vision anchored on the values of being Responsable, Lig-on, Sinsero, sanan may Baruganan, responsible, resilient, sincere, and principled. The framework brings together sports, adventure, agritourism, and ecotourism as part of a broader approach to sustainable tourism development. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Del Carmen Mangrove Forests, the Philippines' largest contiguous mangrove forest covering more than 4,800 hectares, through an immersive eco-tour surrounded by a vast green landscape. On the mainland, the peaceful town of Alegria has developed into an eco-sports tourism destination and has successfully hosted events such as the Governor's Cup National Downhill Skateboarding Competition and the Asia Mountain Bike Series. Malimono is also preparing to welcome a new aqua park, expanding the province's range of adventure attractions. Meanwhile, Santa Monica offers seven kilometers of fine white sand beaches, hidden caves, and dive sites for travelers looking for a quieter and more intimate connection with nature.

The Gateway to Adventure

The journey toward these destinations begins in Surigao City, a dynamic center of governance and commerce. The provincial Capitol Building serves as one of the city's prominent landmarks, with its elegant and well-maintained design reflecting the province's sense of pride and commitment to good governance. From the city, visitors can head to the "little Venice" of Barangay Day-asan, where a new livelihood initiative has introduced a floating restaurant offering fresh seafood. The province is also advancing its digital transformation through a QR code system designed to improve visitor monitoring, strengthen service delivery, and provide data for sustainable tourism planning. With the Department of Tourism's satellite office in General Luna offering immediate assistance to tourists, Surigao del Norte continues to work toward ensuring that every visitor feels welcomed, valued, and properly supported.
