BARUGO, LEYTE — Transforming the local healthcare landscape for thousands of coastal families, the Barugo Municipal Hospital Wellness Hub has officially opened following a comprehensive renovation carried out through a public-private partnership between the SM Foundation and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Barugo.
The upgraded health center expands medical access for the municipality’s approximately 35,000 residents, eliminating the long and costly travel to provincial hospitals in Tacloban City for routine consultations and specialized monitoring.
Upgraded Intergenerational Care Facilities
Where the old setup offered basic accommodations and limited bed capacity, the revitalized wellness hub adds 10 new patient beds and introduces dedicated pediatric and geriatric wards.
Key facility improvements include:
Pediatric Care & Specialized Beds: For the first time, the facility features cribs and safety beds specifically designed for infants and children under two years old.
Geriatric Infrastructure: Wards equipped with anti-slip flooring, age-friendly lighting, and mobility-friendly beds to ensure safety and comfort for senior patients.
Shared Intergenerational Space: An interactive activity corner allowing young and elderly patients to socialize, engage in light recreation, and feel less intimidated during hospital visits.
Digital Health Infrastructure: Integrated digital tools supporting telemedicine consultations, electronic medical records (EMR), and streamlined PhilHealth service processing.
Connie Angeles, SM Foundation Executive Director for Health and Medical Programs, noted that the facility was intentionally designed to foster community across generations, ensuring the environment feels welcoming and equipped for all age groups.
Barugo Mayor Dr. Aron C. Balais underscored the critical addition of pediatric beds, stating that standard hospital wards previously lacked safe, proper accommodations for infants.
Bringing Primary Healthcare Closer To Families
From January to early July 2026, Barugo Municipal Hospital managed nearly 4,000 outpatient consultations and averaged up to 20 inpatients daily, treating conditions such as pneumonia, gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections, stroke, diabetes, and hypertension.
For local families—such as 72-year-old resident Zenaida Colibao, who cares for a son with kidney disease while managing her own hypertension—having expanded medical capabilities nearby offers immense financial and physical relief.
By bridging the healthcare gap in rural Leyte, the Barugo Municipal Hospital Wellness Hub ensures that essential medical care remains accessible, dignified, and close to home.
