TUBUNGAN, Iloilo — A freshly concreted mountain road is opening a smoother path to some of Iloilo’s most promising farm and eco‑tourism destinations. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the ₱9.75‑million Tubungan–Igtuble–San Remigio road upgrade, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.
A Route Transformed
For years, the 270‑meter stretch in Barangay Igtuble was a rough, unpaved section that slowed down vehicles and tested the patience of travelers. During the rainy months, mud and ruts made the road nearly impassable, keeping many would‑be visitors away. Now, the sturdy concrete surface, complete with reflectorized pavement markings and lined canals, offers a safe and reliable passage year‑round.
The improvement may seem short in distance, but it was a critical missing link in the highland corridor connecting Iloilo to Antique. Farmers can now deliver their produce faster, with less damage, while motorcycles and tour vans glide smoothly up the scenic mountain pass. The road no longer dictates the schedule—travelers do.
Agri‑Tourism on the Rise
Tubungan is carving out a name as an agri‑tourism destination, where visitors can pick fresh upland vegetables, tour organic farms, and take in panoramic views from elevated lookouts. The newly paved road makes these attractions more accessible to day‑trippers and weekend wanderers alike. Previously, the rugged terrain discouraged casual tourists, but the improved access is expected to increase visitor arrivals and boost local businesses.
The road also serves as a gateway to other highland attractions, such as the Igpaho viewpoint overlooking the Panay Gulf, and further on to the cool‑climate retreats of San Remigio, Antique. By linking the farm communities with markets and tourists, the project strengthens the entire local economy.
Safety and Sustainability
Beyond convenience, the road upgrade prioritizes safety. Reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings guide motorists even during foggy mornings, while lined canals on both sides prevent erosion and flooding. These features are especially critical in mountainous terrain where sudden downpours can wash away unsecured slopes.
