SURIGAO CITY — As part of the National Disaster Resilience Month celebration, the City Government of Surigao, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), conducted a Tree Planting Activity at the Watershed Area in Sitio Brazil, Barangay Mat-i on July 3, 2026. Representatives from 33 mainland barangays, city employees, and partner agencies joined the activity, planting a total of 400 Magkuno (Ironwood) seedlings.

Through initiatives like this, the City Government of Surigao is strengthening community preparedness and protection, particularly by caring for the environment as one of the most important foundations of safety and resilience for the people of Surigao. The activity demonstrates the city's commitment to disaster risk reduction and environmental conservation, recognizing that healthy ecosystems play a vital role in mitigating the impacts of natural hazards.
Strengthening Watersheds and Reducing Disaster Risks
The planting of Magkuno trees aims to strengthen the watershed, reduce soil erosion, and protect slopes to minimize the risk of floods, landslides, and other natural disasters. This initiative also contributes to preserving the environment for a safer community. The Magkuno tree is known for its durable wood and ability to thrive in various conditions, making it an ideal species for watershed protection and reforestation efforts.
