ILOILO — The Municipality of Tubungan has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first municipality in Iloilo province to attain Grade 2 Basic Sanitation Status. All 48 of its barangays now have proper toilet facilities, setting a new standard for public health in the region.
A Milestone for Public Health
The achievement was highlighted during the ongoing Biyaheng G2 Para sa Limpyo Iloilo Summit 2026. This summit brings together local government units and sanitation workers to promote proper sanitation and a healthier Iloilo. Tubungan's success serves as a powerful example for other municipalities striving for the same goal.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon announced the certification with pride. She explained that Tubungan met the strict requirements of the Department of Health's G2 Basic Sanitation Status under the Philippine Approach to Sustainable Sanitation. The journey was arduous, but the municipality persevered.
What G2 Certification Means
To achieve G2 status, a community must fulfill three key requirements. First, there must be zero open defecation, eliminating any uncontained human waste disposal. Second, no household can share toilets; every family must have its own facility. Third, public spaces like schools, markets, and barangay halls must comply with sanitation standards.
This certification goes beyond basic hygiene. It signifies a fundamental shift in community health practices. For Tubungan, this means every resident now has access to a private, sanitary toilet, reducing the risk of disease and promoting dignity.
Recognizing the Frontliners
The summit also honored the sanitation inspectors who played a crucial role in this achievement. These dedicated individuals worked tirelessly to educate communities and monitor compliance. Their efforts were instrumental in helping Tubungan reach this milestone.
The provincial government recognizes that such success is a collective effort. Inspectors like Kenny Jane Abordaje, Susan Abogadil, and others were formally acknowledged for their commitment. Their work on the ground ensures that public health policies translate into real, tangible improvements.
A Province-Wide Goal
Tubungan's achievement is just the beginning. According to Dr. Rodney Labis of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office, the province aims for all municipalities to achieve G2 certification by 2028. This ambitious target reflects a strong commitment to universal sanitation.
To support this goal, the provincial government allocates ₱5 million annually. This fund is used to purchase toilet bowls and construction materials for households that still lack proper facilities. The financial support ensures that no family is left behind in the push for a cleaner, healthier Iloilo.
A Cleaner, Healthier Future
The Biyaheng G2 Para sa Limpyo Iloilo Summit reinforces the province's dedication to making proper sanitation accessible to every Ilonggo. It celebrates progress while acknowledging the work still ahead. The recognition of Tubungan and other top-performing barangays inspires others to follow suit.
The summit highlights a shared responsibility for public health. It shows that with collaboration and determination, communities can overcome significant challenges. Tubungan's success is a beacon of hope for the entire province.
