ILOILO — Mayor Raisa Treñas' flagship environmental initiative is delivering tangible results, transforming the city's landscape one planting season at a time. The I-Greens Program, launched in August 2025, has already seen thousands of native trees and mangroves take root across the urban and coastal areas.
A Greener Iloilo Takes Root
The program's impressive numbers are a testament to its community-driven approach. A total of 3,221 native trees have been planted across various urban zones. These green spaces are more than just beautification projects; they are vital tools for improving air quality and reducing the urban heat island effect.
Beyond the city streets, coastal resilience is being strengthened with 16,465 mangroves planted along shorelines. These efforts have already helped sequester approximately 141,216 kilograms of carbon. This achievement directly addresses the city's greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, aligning with global climate action targets.
Mangroves as a Climate Shield
The choice to aggressively plant mangroves is no accident; it is a strategic move for a coastal city. Mangroves are often called "blue carbon" ecosystems, absorbing nearly five times more carbon than terrestrial forests. They also serve as a natural defense against storm surges and coastal erosion, protecting lives and property during typhoons.
