Giving School Libraries a Bigger Role
OZAMIZ CITY - A school library can be much more than a room filled with books. When students have access to age-appropriate and diverse learning resources, libraries can support research, reading development, independent study, and classroom activities. The Ozamiz City Schools Division's 2026 procurement covered supplementary learning resources for 19 public-school libraries—11 elementary and eight secondary schools. The project carries an approved budget of ₱3,181,327.79, showing the scale of the effort to expand educational materials available to students. Education can help young people understand both their own communities and the wider world. Diverse learning resources can expose students to different histories, cultures, ideas, and experiences while encouraging respectful discussion.
Making Learning More Inclusive
Inclusive education recognizes that learners can come from different cultural, social, and educational backgrounds. Learning materials therefore need to help students understand perspectives beyond their immediate experiences. The Division of Ozamiz City also prepared for the launching of learning resources on Islamic Values Education and a program implementation review for inclusive education in June 2026. This initiative provides an example of how educational content can be expanded to address different cultural and learning contexts within the school community. For Ozamiz City, strengthening inclusive educational materials could help schools create learning environments where students feel represented while also learning about perspectives different from their own.
Helping Students Develop Independent Learning Habits
Access to additional resources can encourage students to become more independent learners. Instead of depending entirely on classroom discussions, students can use library materials to investigate subjects, compare information, complete projects, and develop personal interests. This becomes especially valuable as students progress into higher levels of education, where research and self-directed study become increasingly important. Strengthening school libraries can therefore complement teachers' work while giving learners another avenue for developing academic confidence.
