OZAMIZ CITY - The Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape is more than a picturesque stretch of coastline. The Department of Tourism Northern Mindanao describes the protected area as a 309.5-hectare landscape and seascape containing colorful fish species, seagrass, coral reef ecosystems, mangroves, and habitat for waterbirds. Those elements create a connected environment rather than isolated attractions. The same tourism source identifies boating, snorkeling, scuba diving, and islet hopping among the activities available in the area. That combination gives Baliangao a different character from a beach destination focused only on swimming and sunbathing. Here, visitors can look at the coast from above, then discover an entirely different environment below the surface.
Where Reefs Become Part of the Journey
For underwater enthusiasts, Baliangao's marine setting provides another layer to a trip through Misamis Occidental. Earlier government-led dive exploration in the province identified Baliangao among several coastal areas examined for potential diving tourism, while the protected-area profile recognizes coral reefs and seagrass as important components of the ecosystem. The attraction, therefore, is not simply the promise of colorful scenery underwater; it is the chance to encounter a coastal environment that has conservation value. Divers and snorkelers should treat that distinction seriously. Reefs are living ecosystems, so enjoying them responsibly means avoiding contact with corals, following site rules, and leaving marine life undisturbed.
A Destination Growing With Care
Baliangao's tourism story gained another chapter in 2026 when the municipality launched a Tourism Development Plan alongside six infrastructure projects. The plan identified eight tourism districts, with White Sand Beaches in Sitio Tinago, the Cliff View Area in Sitio Balas-Diot, and Kabgan Island among the sites opened under the initiative. Meanwhile, a March 2026 meeting of the Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape Management Board brought together government and academic representatives to discuss science-based management of the protected area. These developments make the underwater attractions especially interesting: Baliangao is not simply showcasing scenery, but planning tourism while maintaining attention on the natural systems that make the destination worth visiting.
