ANGELES CITY, PAMPANGA — The Angeles City Agriculture Office continues to inspire Angeleños to get their hands dirty and actively participate in growing community vegetable gardens through the flagship Gulayan sa Barangay program. This inisyatiba (initiative) aims to level up the knowledge and involvement of local residents in urban gardening, seedling production, organic fertilizer utilization, and hydroponics. These serve as highly practical solutions for cultivating mga gulay (vegetables) even when dealing with tight, limited spaces.

Practical Planting in Limited Spaces

Through the use of backyards, pots, and other alternative planting spots, local families can easily raise their own produce to secure a fresh and healthy food supply right at home . Aside from promoting a healthier diet, this backyard farming helps families save on gastusin sa pagkain (food expenses) while transforming unused spots in the household and community into productive green spaces . The program also emphasizes the importance of proper soil care and correct planting techniques to establish a much more sustainable system for long-term food production . Participants are taught simple methods using recycled materials like plastic cups and household containers to start their own vegetable gardens, which is especially vital in a highly urbanized city like Angeles where many families lack wide yards for traditional planting.

Local Government Support for Sustainable Agriculture

With the active backing of Mayor Carmelo “Jon” B. Lazatin II, the Angeles City Government remains fully committed to pushing programs that champion environmental conservation, responsible resource management, and the hands-on cooperation of Angeleños in developing their respective mga barangay. The City Agriculture Office has distributed modern agricultural equipment including biomass shredder machines and vermicompost tea brewers to Barangay Pandan and Barangay Malabanias to accelerate the processing of biodegradable waste into organic fertilizer . A community vegetable garden has also been established at the rotunda of MacArthur Highway in Barangay Pandan, featuring organic vegetables open to all residents. Residents are warmly encouraged to jumpstart their own home gardens today and join the movement to make the community a much greener, healthier, and more productive place to live.
