SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA - The Department of Tourism Region III (DOT-III) is actively championing inclusive and age-friendly tourism by empowering senior citizens to become active participants in the region's tourism sector. During the NCSC Region III Roundtable Discussion held on August 24, 2026, at Hotel Gracelane in San Fernando, the DOT highlighted its successful collaboration with the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and the Angeles City Tourism Office. This partnership resulted in the first-ever Community Guiding Seminar for Senior Citizens in Central Luzon, held from July 7–9 and 13–16, 2026, which is part of a broader national program designed to utilize the wisdom and experience of the elderly to promote local heritage. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the significant role senior citizens can play in the tourism industry, not just as visitors, but as valuable contributors and storytellers of their communities' rich history and culture.
Pioneering Inclusive Tourism Through Community Guiding
The Community Guiding Seminar for Senior Citizens is a landmark program in Central Luzon, training older residents to become official storytellers of their cultural heritage. This initiative directly combats the misconception that senior citizens are merely passive recipients of services, instead positioning them as active and valued members of the tourism workforce. By participating, seniors gain not only practical skills in tourism, hospitality, and service recovery but also a renewed sense of purpose and community engagement. The program culminates in a hands-on mock tour, testing participants in real-world guiding scenarios, and provides a clear pathway for graduates to become accredited tour guides, enabling them to earn a livelihood and contribute directly to the local economy.
