SIARGAO, Surigao del Norte — The world’s surfing elite have descended upon the shores of Siargao as the island prepares to host the historic World Surf League (WSL) Philippines Pro Championship Tour. Running from October 31 to November 10, 2026, this marks the first time the Philippines has hosted surfing’s crown jewel, placing the country firmly on the global sports tourism map.

A Restored Icon for a Global Stage

The event officially kicked off with the blessing of the newly renovated Cloud 9 Tower, a beloved landmark synonymous with Siargao’s rich surfing culture. The three-storey structure, originally built in 2003 and devastated by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, now stands as a resilient, world-class viewing platform for spectators and media.

The restoration was spearheaded by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in partnership with the local government of General Luna and the province of Surigao del Norte. PSC Chairman Patrick C. Gregorio emphasized that the tower represents the resilient spirit of the surfing community, elevating the island’s heritage to the global stage. Governor Lyndon Barbers and Mayor Johnson Y. Sajulga joined the celebration, highlighting the tower’s role in boosting local tourism and livelihoods.

Elite Surfers Arrive in Paradise

The arrival of global stars like Yago Dora, Kanoa Igarashi, and Miguel Pupo has sent waves of excitement through the local community. The men’s division is led by World No. 1 Yago Dora of Brazil, alongside Brazilian heavyweights Italo Ferreira, Gabriel Medina, and Filipe Toledo. The women’s side features top-ranked Molly Picklum of Australia and U.S. sensation Caroline Marks.

The Philippines will be proudly represented by three local heroes: the King of Cloud 9, John Mark “Marama” Tokong, along with Jayuard Alciso and Mara Lopez. Their participation as wildcards against the world’s best underscores the depth of homegrown talent and the inspiring potential of Filipino surfers on the international circuit.

A Catalyst for Sports Tourism

PSC Chairman Gregorio highlighted that sports tourism is a powerful platform that showcases destinations, drives local economies, and inspires communities. The WSL event is expected to generate significant employment, attract investments, and stimulate the local economy as thousands of fans, athletes, and organizers flock to the island.

The government’s coordinated efforts, through the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee, ensure that infrastructure and services are fully prepared for this monumental event. From improved airport access to enhanced local accommodations, Siargao is ready to deliver an unforgettable experience that rivals the world’s biggest sporting spectacles.

The World is Watching Siargao

For the people of General Luna and the entire province, this event is more than a competition; it is a triumphant symbol of recovery and resilience. As the world’s best surfers ride the legendary barrels of Cloud 9, they will carry the story of Siargao’s beauty, warmth, and unbreakable spirit to every corner of the globe.
