DAVAO CITY — The First Mindanao Indigenous People Trade Expo (MIPTEX) 2026 officially opened its doors at Poblacion Market Central on October 26. The five-day event brings together Indigenous communities from across the region to showcase their unique products, deep creativity, and rich cultural traditions to a broader audience.
Celebrating Heritage and Sustainable Opportunities
Under the theme “Celebrating Indigenous Heritage, Strengthening Indigenous Wealth Management, and Expanding Sustainable Opportunities,” the expo serves as a vital platform for cultural preservation. Visitors can discover authentic finds while directly supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs and their families.
A special focus is placed on women- and youth-led enterprises, empowering the next generation of cultural bearers. By championing local livelihoods, the event highlights the profound stories behind every woven fabric, crafted pottery, and traditional delicacy, turning everyday commerce into a highly meaningful and enriching cultural exchange.
A Powerful Multi-Sectoral Collaboration
The landmark initiative is co-organized by the New Zealand Embassy Manila, the Mindanao Development Authority, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. Their combined efforts underscore a strong commitment to uplifting Indigenous communities through sustainable economic development and genuine partnership.
Supported by local and international partners like the United Nations Development Programme, the Department of Trade and Industry, and Alsons Development and Investment Corporation, the expo bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern market access. This alliance provides Indigenous producers with the essential tools to thrive.
Fostering Indigenous-to-Indigenous Trade
A key highlight of the expo is the insightful panel discussion titled “Indigenous-to-Indigenous Trade: Heritage Livelihoods, Economic Governance, and Shared Futures.” DTI 11 Regional Director Romeo Castañaga participated as a panelist, sharing valuable strategies for economic empowerment and regional cooperation.
As a crucial partner, the DTI supports these enterprises through comprehensive business development services, capacity-building programs, and enhanced market access. By equipping Indigenous businesses with modern marketing tools, the agency ensures they become more competitive globally while retaining their unique and authentic cultural identity.
Boosting Tourism Through Authentic Experiences
For tourists and locals alike, MIPTEX 2026 offers a highly immersive travel experience right in the heart of Davao City. The vibrant marketplace transforms into a living museum, allowing guests to engage directly with artisans, purchase original artworks, and deeply understand the rich heritage of Mindanao.
Hosting this event at Poblacion Market Central highlights Davao City's role as a melting pot of cultures. It provides a vital economic boost to the local hospitality sector, drawing visitors who appreciate authentic cultural immersion and the vibrant flavors of Indigenous culinary traditions.
By integrating cultural tourism with economic empowerment, the expo creates a sustainable cycle of growth. Visitors leave with authentic souvenirs and unforgettable memories, while the Indigenous communities gain long-term financial stability and broader recognition for their invaluable contributions to the region.
