CAGAYAN DE ORO — Inside the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Cagayan de Oro City Jail Male Dormitory, a modest coffee stall is serving much more than just caffeine. Known as "Beans Behind Bars," this five-square-meter kiosk has become a symbol of transformation, providing persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) with the opportunity to master barista skills while preparing for their eventual return to society. During a recent graduation ceremony for the Department of Education's Alternative Learning System, visitors were greeted by the aroma of freshly steamed milk and the warm service of PDLs who take pride in their craft. For participants like Mark, who meticulously prepares cups like "The Warden's Brew," each drink represents a tangible step toward a future defined by new skills and restored dignity.
Developing Professional Skills Through Hands-On Barista Training Programs
The initiative is operated by PDLs under the guidance of the BJMP's Welfare and Development Unit, in active partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). By learning how to measure coffee ratios, steam milk, and provide quality customer service, participants gain confidence and professional experience that go beyond the walls of the jail. The stall offers a variety of beverages, including milk tea, fruit tea, and fruit soda, allowing learners to master diverse skills in beverage preparation. This hands-on environment transforms daily tasks into meaningful vocational training, ensuring that those involved are better equipped for potential employment once they complete their sentences.
Creating A Positive Space For Community Connection And Healing
More than just a source of refreshment for jail officers, guests, and fellow PDLs, the kiosk serves as a bridge between the facility and the outside world. Engaging with visitors through the act of serving coffee helps participants practice social interaction and rebuild their self-worth, which is essential for emotional healing. This simple, consistent act of service fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride that can be difficult to maintain in a confined environment. By highlighting these positive initiatives, the community is encouraged to see beyond the past of these individuals and recognize their capacity for growth and meaningful contribution.
Building A Foundation For A Successful Post-Release Future
The success of the Beans Behind Bars project demonstrates the power of livelihood programs in reducing recidivism and supporting long-term rehabilitation. As these individuals continue to hone their craft, they are not only learning to operate a small business but are also demonstrating their readiness to become self-reliant and productive citizens. Programs like this serve as a vital reminder that with the right support, guidance, and opportunity, everyone deserves the chance to start over. It is a hopeful example of how Cagayan de Oro is finding innovative ways to support the holistic development of every member of its community, ensuring that their future is defined by their progress rather than their past.
