International Cruise Itineraries Expand Across the Region
LEYTE - Eastern Visayas is strengthening its position in the international expedition cruise market with three luxury cruise ships scheduled to visit the region in 2027. According to the Department of Tourism-Eastern Visayas, the vessels are expected to bring more than 600 passengers to destinations in Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Samar. The scheduled visits will introduce international travelers to destinations known for their natural landscapes, coastal communities, cultural heritage, and island experiences. The growing number of cruise calls also reflects increasing interest in destinations that offer experiences beyond conventional city-based tourism.
Cuatro Islas and Limasawa Among Featured Destinations
The first scheduled arrival will come from Swan Hellenic Cruises, whose vessel is expected to visit Cuatro Islas in Leyte in May 2027 with approximately 160 passengers. In June, the Portuguese cruise ship Heritage Adventurer is scheduled to visit selected destinations in Calbayog City and Paranas in Samar. Another major arrival is expected in September, when French cruise line Compagnie du Ponant plans to visit Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte and Cuatro Islas in Leyte, bringing around 280 passengers. These itineraries place several Eastern Visayas destinations on the radar of international travelers seeking smaller-scale and culturally focused cruise experiences.
Cruise Tourism Creates Opportunities for Island Communities
The arrival of expedition cruise passengers could provide an important source of tourism activity for communities that may have fewer hotels, restaurants, and other facilities needed to attract traditional overnight visitors. Instead of relying primarily on long-stay tourism, smaller island destinations can benefit from short shore excursions that introduce visitors to local attractions, traditions, food, crafts, and coastal environments. The DOT-Eastern Visayas views this type of tourism as an opportunity to spread economic benefits beyond the region's established tourist centers. Local businesses, tour operators, transport providers, guides, artisans, and community-based enterprises may all benefit when cruise passengers visit their communities.
