Strengthening Sanitation Practices in Public Markets
BACOLOD - The Bacolod City Government has started a training program designed to strengthen sanitation and pest control practices among market vendors and employees. The Training on Basic Pest Biology, Pest Control, Sanitation and Disinfection began at Burgos Market on September 10 under the G-Merkado program of Mayor Greg Gasataya. Led by the BCD–City Administrator’s Office, the initiative aims to improve the management of cleanliness and pest control in public markets, particularly in areas where food is prepared, handled, and sold.
Promoting Better Pest Control and Food Safety
The training provides participants with practical knowledge on identifying common pests found in market environments and understanding how to prevent their spread. It also covers safe pest control practices, organized sanitation and disinfection procedures, and measures that can help strengthen food safety and public health standards. By giving vendors and market employees better knowledge of proper sanitation practices, the program encourages everyone working in public markets to take a more active role in maintaining clean, safe, and presentable surroundings for both vendors and customers.
Expanding the Program Across Bacolod Markets
The G-Merkado training is being conducted across several public markets in Bacolod to reach more market workers and strengthen sanitation practices citywide. Following the session at Burgos Market, the training is scheduled for the Bacolod Central Market on September 12, followed by the Libertad Public Market on September 14. The continuing rollout demonstrates the city government’s effort to establish more consistent standards for cleanliness, pest management, food safety, and public health in its markets. Through these measures, Bacolod aims to create public market environments that are cleaner, safer, and more comfortable for both vendors and the communities they serve.
