Turning Fishponds Into Food Production Hubs
BOHOL - The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist conducted an ocular inspection of the existing fishponds in coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region VII, the Municipal Government of Clarin, and BISU Clarin Campus. The initiative focuses on repairing and improving the facilities while expanding the campus-based Bangus Holding and Grow-out Area. With better facilities, the project can help create a stronger environment for fish production and provide additional support for Bohol’s local seafood supply.
Bringing Technical Expertise to the Project
The project is also backed by fisheries specialists who can help guide its development. BFAR VII provided technical expertise through personnel from the Central Bangus Hatchery in Pangangan Island and the Central Visayas Multi-Species Nursery Demonstration and Training Center in Bentig, Calape. Their involvement brings practical aquaculture knowledge into the improvement efforts, helping ensure that the fishpond facilities are developed with production and sustainability in mind. It is a collaborative effort that connects government agencies, an academic institution, and the local community toward one goal: stronger local fish production.
Growing a More Resilient Fisheries Sector
Improving fishponds is more than an infrastructure project—it is an investment in food security and the future of Bohol’s fisheries. As climate conditions become more challenging, developing reliable local sources of fish can help communities and markets become better prepared. With the right facilities, technical support, and continued cooperation, the Clarin project can become another building block for a stronger aquaculture sector, helping Bohol produce more food locally while creating opportunities for sustainable fisheries development across the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark.
