A Coastal Landscape Full of Life

BOHOL - The assessment covered coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and mangrove boundaries in Basdio, Cabantian, Canhaway, Guinacot, Sawang, Tabajan, and Trinidad. One of the notable discoveries was the presence of more than 20 mangrove species, despite Guindulman having relatively small mangrove areas. Underwater surveys also revealed a variety of hard and soft corals, including massive formations, Acropora species, and table corals. Some areas showed slight coral bleaching, highlighting why continued observation of these habitats remains important.

Wildlife Adds to the Coastal Story

The survey also recorded native giant clams and several target fish species, giving researchers a broader picture of the marine communities living along Guindulman’s coast. Parrotfish were observed in considerable numbers, a positive ecological sign because these herbivorous reef fish help control algae that can compete with corals for space. Together with the seagrass and mangrove findings, these observations show how different coastal habitats work as connected parts of one ecosystem. Healthy mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs do more than provide beautiful scenery—they create shelter, feeding areas, and nursery grounds for marine life while supporting coastal communities.

Turning Discoveries Into Conservation

The assessment was conducted by the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office in collaboration with BFAR Region 7, Bohol Island State University-Candijay Campus, and DENR-CENRO Talibon, with support from the local government of Guindulman. Following an earlier Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment, the latest activity helps establish baseline information that can support future habitat monitoring and resource management. Every species documented and every reef or mangrove area surveyed adds another piece to the picture of Bohol’s natural heritage. Protecting these coastal ecosystems today helps preserve the biodiversity, livelihoods, and natural beauty that make the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark remarkable.
