Successful Tilapia Harvest Strengthens Local Livelihood
BOHOL - The San Miguel Tilapia Growers Association completed its third successful harvest from its HDPE fish cage located at the NIA Dam in Bayongan, San Miguel, Bohol. During the August 21, 2026 harvest, the association collected 980 kilograms of tilapia valued at PHP103,000. This added to its first harvest of 1,622 kilograms worth PHP171,000 and second harvest of 989 kilograms worth PHPH105,000, bringing the total production to 3,591 kilograms with combined sales reaching PHP379,000. The income generated from the harvests has already been deposited into the association's bank account for use in future production expenses and organizational development.
Supporting Aquaculture and Community Enterprise
Governor Erico Aris Aumentado highlighted the achievement as a reflection of the members' hard work, active participation, and effective management. The continued success of the association demonstrates how organized community-based aquaculture can provide additional livelihood opportunities while encouraging cooperation among local producers. By maintaining their fish production activities, the members can strengthen their income-generating capacity and build a more sustainable organization. The initiative also demonstrates the potential of available water resources to support productive agricultural and fisheries activities that benefit local communities.
Government Support Helps Grow Local Fish Production
The tilapia project was carried out with support from the Provincial Government of Bohol through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), and the Local Government Unit of San Miguel. Their combined assistance provides the association with institutional support as it continues developing its aquaculture operations. The successful harvests demonstrate how partnerships between fisherfolk organizations, local government, and national agencies can help expand livelihood opportunities and strengthen local food production. With continued cooperation and proper management, the San Miguel Tilapia Growers Association can further develop its production and contribute to the agricultural and economic activities of the community.
