CARLES, Iloilo — Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. led the groundbreaking of a ₱20-million Food Hub at Bancal Port on July 21, 2026, marking a major investment in the province’s agri-tourism infrastructure. The facility aims to connect local farmers and fisherfolk directly with tourists, turning a busy port into a culinary destination.
A Gateway to Island Flavors
The 500-square-meter hub will feature vendor stalls, display areas, and a restaurant showcasing Carles’ renowned seafood and agricultural produce. It will serve as a comfortable welcome point for visitors heading to the Gigantes Islands and Sicogon Island. Governor Defensor said the project is about making tourists comfortable while giving local traders a permanent, high-traffic venue to sell their goods.
Mayor Arnold Betita II expressed gratitude for the provincial investment, noting that the hub will effectively showcase the best of what Carles has to offer. The facility will eliminate middlemen, allowing fisherfolk and farmers to earn more by selling directly to consumers. Its strategic location at the main jump‑off point ensures a steady stream of customers.
Part of a Provincial Agri-Tourism Push
The Food Hub aligns with Governor Defensor’s tourism campaign, “Fun, Foodie, Friendly sa Kabanwahanan,” under the broader MoRProGRes Iloilo initiative. The program positions local government units as primary hubs for tourism activities, leveraging Ilonggo hospitality and gastronomy. Carles’ hub is the first of three planned across northern Iloilo, with additional facilities to rise in Concepcion and Estancia.
Provincial Tourism Officer Aulynn Yue Sin emphasized that capacity‑building programs will accompany the infrastructure. Vendors will receive training in food safety, handling, and product development to ensure quality and sustainability. The goal is to create a complete experience where tourists can gather, eat delicious local food, and start their island adventures comfortably.
A Boost for the Local Economy
By providing a dedicated space for small‑scale producers, the hub is expected to stimulate economic activity in Carles and nearby towns. Fisherfolk can sell fresh scallops, crabs, and fish directly, while farmers can offer fruits, vegetables, and processed goods. The province is also investing in road connectivity, water systems, and health facilities to support the growing tourism sector.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Vice Mayor Earl Patrick Betita, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Acting Provincial Engineer Jeb Escarilla, and other officials. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort between provincial and municipal governments. The hub represents a concrete step toward making Iloilo’s northern corridor a must‑visit destination for food‑loving travelers.
