According to the Dumaguete City Government, the Spanish-era structure was built primarily from coral stones using mamposteria construction. Its upper two tiers were added in 1897 when it was converted into the church's bell tower. The structure originally served a defensive purpose. It was built over the remains of a southeastern watchtower that helped protect the fortified church and surrounding community from raids. Today, it stands as one of the most visible reminders of Dumaguete’s Spanish colonial past.
