The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Negros Oriental, in partnership with the Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI), conducted a learning session on Philippine National Standards for steel products in Dumaguete City on October 14, 2026. The activity aimed to strengthen local government awareness of steel quality and safety requirements as part of Consumer Welfare Month 2026.

Strengthening Awareness of Steel Standards

Held at Southview Hotel, the session gathered representatives from local government units, including Engineering and Procurement Offices, Market Inspection Officers, and members of the media. Anchored on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” the activity highlighted the importance of ensuring that steel products used in construction and public infrastructure comply with applicable safety and quality standards. The session also provided an opportunity for participants to better understand how product standards help protect consumers and support safer construction practices.

Strengthening the Role of Local Government Units

During her opening remarks, Consumer Protection Division OIC Chief Krystle Jade Bato emphasized the importance of cooperation between the DTI and local government units in enforcing product standards. She highlighted the role of product certification and market surveillance in promoting compliance with mandatory standards and addressing products that fail to meet requirements. Bato also discussed the responsibilities of different LGU offices. Engineering Offices help evaluate construction materials, Procurement Offices incorporate relevant standards into purchasing requirements, and Market Inspection Officers help identify and report potentially non-compliant products.

Promoting Safer Construction and Public Infrastructure

Steel products play an important role in buildings, roads, and other infrastructure projects. Ensuring that these materials meet established quality and safety requirements helps reduce risks and supports the responsible use of public resources. Through the learning session, DTI Negros Oriental and PISI reinforced the importance of checking product compliance and strengthening awareness among local officials who help oversee construction materials and government procurement.
