A Landmark With Centuries of History
The history of St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral goes back to 1620, when the parish of Dumaguete was established. The present stone church was later constructed from 1754 to 1776, making it one of the oldest surviving stone churches in Negros. The church has remained an important part of Dumaguete's identity through generations. In 1955, it became the seat of the newly established Diocese of Dumaguete, giving the historic church its status as a cathedral.
A Glimpse Into Dumaguete's Architectural Heritage
The cathedral's stone construction reflects the architectural traditions of the Spanish colonial period. Its long history can also be seen in the changes and restorations made to the structure over time, including reconstruction in 1885 and later work on its façade.

Just beside the cathedral stands the Dumaguete Watchtower-Belfry, an important part of the city's heritage landscape. The National Museum of the Philippines describes the structure as a historical landmark that originally served as a watchtower and lookout post for warning the community of approaching danger. The belfry itself is also recognized for its cultural and historical importance. The National Museum declared it an Important Cultural Property in 2020, highlighting its exceptional cultural, artistic, and historical significance.
