A New Kind of Investment Is Taking Shape
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - General Santos City may soon add another major agricultural-processing activity to its economic landscape. According to reports Liwayway China, AGL Group, and Joyvio Freshcall are preparing for a coconut-processing facility in the city after studying potential Philippine locations for more than a year. The proposed operation would produce both food and non-food coconut products for distribution through networks in China. The announcement is notable because it connects a Mindanao city directly with an overseas market while giving agricultural commodities another path beyond raw production. For General Santos, the proposal adds variety to its growing portfolio of food-related businesses and investment possibilities.
Beyond Coconuts: A Wider Market for Local Agriculture
The proposed facility could also matter beyond the coconut industry itself. DTI said the companies involved have shown interest in other Philippine agricultural products, including ube, pili nuts, and specialty coffee, for possible use in goods destined for the Chinese market. That detail creates a broader story for General Santos because the city could potentially serve as part of a processing and distribution chain involving several agricultural commodities. The proposal also arrives while government agencies in Region XII are working with coconut farmers on improved production practices. This year, agricultural training in General Santos included lessons on farm management, post-harvest handling, diversification, and quality assurance.
Farmers Meet a Changing Coconut Industry
The investment proposal comes alongside efforts to improve the quality and productivity of coconut production in the wider SOCCSKSARGEN area. Agricultural Training Institute Region XII conducted Good Agricultural Practices training involving coconut farmers from General Santos and nearby Sarangani communities in 2026. The sessions covered production management, pest and disease control, harvesting, post-harvest practices, diversification, and certification standards. These programs provide a useful backdrop to the proposed processing investment because stronger production practices can help farmers participate in more demanding supply chains. While the facility remains a planned investment rather than an operating plant, its proposed presence gives added attention to the region’s potential as a source of processed agricultural products.
