When Training Turns Into a Challenge
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Rescuelympics 2026 brought together Search, Rescue, and Retrieval teams from Cotabato Province, South Cotabato, Sarangani, and General Santos City. Instead of simply attending a seminar, the responders had to demonstrate their abilities through simulated emergency situations designed to test their performance under pressure. The activity was organized through the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council XII and the Office of Civil Defense Region XII. For the GenSan team, the gathering provided a setting where practical response skills could be exercised alongside teams handling similar responsibilities elsewhere in the region.
Speed Matters, But So Does Working Together
Emergency response is rarely a one-person job, and the competition placed attention on exactly that reality. The simulated scenarios measured the teams' ability to act quickly while coordinating their movements and decisions with other responders. PIA reported that the activity was intended to reinforce teamwork, strengthen knowledge, and build confidence among disaster-response units. Those skills are useful beyond a competition because actual emergencies often require several people to perform different tasks while working toward the same objective.
A Different Kind of Preparation for GenSan
For General Santos City, participation in the regional challenge adds another layer to its disaster-preparedness efforts without requiring the city to wait for an actual emergency to find out how its responders perform. The exercise allowed teams to identify how well they could translate procedures and training into action when circumstances became more demanding. It also placed GenSan's responders in the same field environment as neighboring teams, creating an opportunity to exchange experience through hands-on work. Rather than being about a trophy alone, the September activity was ultimately about keeping rescue personnel practiced, coordinated, and prepared for situations where their skills may be needed most.
