GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The General Santos City Health Office has received its second Red Orchid Award, with the recognition presented on September 29, 2026, at The Farm in Koronadal City. According to the award announcement supplied through the City Health Office’s Facebook post, the recognition highlights the city’s continuing implementation of programs promoting smoke-free environments and tobacco-use prevention. The Department of Health’s SOCCSKSARGEN office previously documented the Red Orchid program as a recognition based on compliance with national and international tobacco-control policies, including records review, interviews, site visits, and ocular inspections.
Turning Policy Into Everyday Protection
Behind the recognition is a public-health effort that involves more than an award ceremony, with tobacco-control work requiring policies, education, monitoring, enforcement, and support for healthier choices. The City Health Office identifies itself as the city government’s primary agency for planning, implementing, and monitoring public-health programs, while its network includes rural health units and barangay-level facilities serving communities throughout General Santos City. In April 2026, DOH-CHD SOCCSKSARGEN also conducted MPOWER-related capacity building in General Santos City, reinforcing the importance of evidence-based tobacco-control strategies and policy implementation.

In July 2026, Data and Implementation Sciences for Health reported meeting with the City Health Office to discuss the next phase of the LEAd for a Smoke-Free Future project, including the city’s smoke-free and anti-vaping ordinance, the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, capacity building, and technical support for local tobacco control.
