DUMANGAS, Iloilo — The Municipality of Dumangas, through its Municipal Agriculture Office, has taken a significant step toward modernizing local farming with the deployment of the DA Agricultural Drone Service. The technology was used for fertilizer and crop care application covering the BAEDAMATA Farmer Cluster in Barangay Dacutan.
A Leap Toward Precision Farming
The adoption of agricultural drone technology marks a shift toward precision farming in Iloilo. Drones cover large fields in a fraction of the time required for manual spraying. They distribute liquid fertilizers and pesticides with precise spray patterns, ensuring consistent coverage across entire crop areas.
This efficiency translates directly into time and labor savings for farmers. Traditional backpack spraying requires hours of walking through fields under the hot sun. With drones, the same task is completed in minutes, allowing farmers to focus on other productive activities.
Reducing Health Risks and Labor Burden
Traditional spraying methods expose farmworkers directly to chemicals, posing serious health risks. The heavy backpacks also cause physical strain and fatigue. Drones automate the process, significantly reducing chemical exposure and manual labor for local farmers.
The technology also addresses the growing challenge of agricultural labor shortages. With an aging farmer demographic across the Philippines, automation helps maintain productivity despite workforce constraints. Younger generations are more likely to view agriculture as a viable profession when it embraces modern tools.
Cost Savings Through Precision Application
Precision drone spraying prevents over-application and runoff of expensive fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers save money on input materials while maximizing crop health and potential yields. Every drop of fertilizer reaches its intended target rather than being wasted.
These cost savings are particularly meaningful for smallholder farmers operating on tight margins. By reducing input costs and increasing efficiency, drone technology helps improve profitability. It also encourages sustainable practices by minimizing chemical runoff into waterways and surrounding ecosystems.
Strengthening Food Security in Western Visayas
Iloilo serves as the primary rice granary of Western Visayas, producing over half of the region's total palay. Improving farming efficiency in key agricultural towns like Dumangas directly supports the region's food supply. Every hectare farmed more efficiently contributes to national food security.
The municipality's support for its farmers reflects a broader commitment to agricultural development. By providing access to modern technology, Dumangas ensures that local farmers remain competitive. This proactive approach positions the town as a model for other municipalities in the province.
Democratizing Access to Technology
High-tech agricultural machinery is usually too expensive for smallholder farmers to purchase individually. Government-provided drone services level the playing field by granting farmer clusters access without upfront capital investments. The BAEDAMATA cluster in Barangay Dacutan serves as a pilot beneficiary.
This model demonstrates how public resources can bridge the technology gap. By pooling resources and offering shared services, local governments can empower small farmers to compete in an increasingly mechanized industry. The Dumangas initiative provides a replicable blueprint for other agricultural communities.
