CEBU CITY — The inaugural Governor’s Zero Hunger Run turned the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds into a massive celebration of fitness and compassion on August 2, 2026, drawing 3,500 participants and generating P2.9 million. The proceeds will directly support food security and nutrition programs across the province.
A Race with a Mission
Governor Pamela Baricuatro, who joined the 1K fun run alongside Capitol employees and local officials, described the event as the country’s first footrace dedicated entirely to fighting hunger. She stressed that eliminating hunger requires a collective effort. The governor thanked every runner for turning an advocacy into a movement.
The event was organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission as a highlight of Cebu’s 457th Founding Anniversary. Runners chose from 21K, 12K, 6K, 3K, and a non‑competitive 1K dash. The atmosphere blended athletic competition with a shared sense of purpose, as each stride contributed directly to feeding those in need.
Fast Feet, Big Hearts
Kenyan runner Eric Chepsiror dominated the men’s 21K division, crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 59 seconds. His compatriots Daniel Boiwo and Luka Lagat secured second and third places, while John Veloso Pomeroy and Temistocles Dela Concepcion rounded out the top five. The international presence elevated the race’s prestige.
In the women’s 21K, Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Artjoy Torregosa claimed victory in 1:32:16. Kay Razel Cubdangan, Josephine Rodriguez, April Joy Rapiz, and Addygel Mie Truz completed the top five. Winners in the shorter distances included Mark Mahinay (12K), Jacob Cagomoc (6K), and Jean Emard Valmoria (3K).
Celebrating Cebu’s Bounty
Beyond the race bibs, the event transformed into a culinary showcase dubbed the “Feast of Cebu.” Twelve local government units—including Samboan, Santander, Alcantara, and Tuburan—set up colorful booths offering native delicacies and homegrown products. Finishing runners were treated to local treats, reinforcing the theme that food symbolizes community and shared effort.
Raffle prizes added to the excitement, with smartphones, laptops, and even motorcycles given away to lucky participants. Nearly P250,000 in cash prizes were awarded to top finishers. The combination of competition, food, and prizes created a festive atmosphere that stretched from dawn until the last runner crossed the line.
A Global Vision for Next Year
The overwhelming success has already inspired plans to expand the event into an international running festival next year. Governor Baricuatro and CPSC Chairman Dr. Rhoel Dejano expressed confidence that the Zero Hunger Run can attract athletes from across Asia and beyond. The race proved that the fight against hunger can start with a single step—and a united community.
