PHILIPPINES — Southeast Asian countries are being urged to unite under a single wellness identity to capture the booming $6.8-trillion global wellness economy. The call was made at the opening of the ASEAN Health Tourism & Wellness Economy Summit in Pasay City on Friday.
A Call for Regional Convergence
Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Ferdinand "Perry" Ferrer emphasized the need for collaboration over competition. He said ASEAN's 11 nations should build a wellness identity that is unmistakably and proudly regional. The future of wellness extends beyond traditional spas and supplements.
Ferrer highlighted the dissolving boundaries between sectors. Healthcare now converges with hospitality, nutrition with technology, and mental well-being with public policy. This convergence unlocks extraordinary economic scale when entrepreneurs move across economies.
Social Protection as Part of the Wellness Agenda
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian stressed that social protection must be integral to the wellness conversation. He said wellness is shaped by the systems and communities that support people, not just individual choices. Economic growth in wellness must be accompanied by investments that ensure inclusive participation.
Gatchalian pointed to programs like the Walang Gutom Program and the Sustainable Livelihood Program. These initiatives help vulnerable Filipinos access livelihood opportunities and move toward economic self-sufficiency. The goal is to make the wellness economy accessible to all, not just the affluent.
The Philippines' Growing Wellness Sector
The health and wellness sector in the Philippines alone generated $5.5 billion in 2024. Medical tourism accounted for $1.2 billion of that total. Gatchalian said these figures represent only a portion of the region's potential.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim reaffirmed the country's commitment as ASEAN chair in 2026. He emphasized a vision where ASEAN wellness is accessible and communities are empowered. The goal is to build a future where health is a shared birthright, not a privilege.
Opportunities for Everyday Filipinos
The unified wellness identity opens doors for expanded local job opportunities. Recruitment will rise in health services, therapy, spa operations, hospitality, and eco-tourism. Upgraded preventive healthcare will also improve local medical facilities nationwide.
Traditional Filipino wellness practices like Hilot will gain international commercial recognition. Local organic and nutraceutical products can enter global markets. The movement transforms health and wellness from a personal expense into an engine for national resilience.
