Providing Essential Food Assistance for Elderly Residents
BACOLOD - The Bacolod City Government has officially launched the distribution of 10 kilograms of rice to qualified senior citizens as part of the national government's "Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Bawat Bayan Makikinabang" program. The initial rollout was conducted in Barangays Sum-ag and Cabug, benefiting 1,712 elderly residents aged 65 years old and above who are not currently receiving social pensions from either local or national government programs. Mayor Greg Gasataya personally led the distribution together with city and barangay officials, ensuring the orderly release of assistance to beneficiaries. The initiative demonstrates the city's commitment to supporting senior citizens by helping reduce their food expenses amid the continuing rise in the cost of living.
Extending Support to More Senior Citizens
According to city officials, the rice assistance program will continue for six months beginning in July, providing sustained support to thousands of elderly residents throughout Bacolod. Mayor Gasataya noted that while approximately ₱100 million is allocated annually for social pension programs, only a portion of the city's estimated senior citizen population currently receives pension benefits. The rice assistance program was therefore introduced to help bridge this gap by reaching elderly residents who are not covered by existing pension assistance. Distribution will continue across other barangays as the city expands the program to serve more qualified beneficiaries in the coming months.
Strengthening Bacolod's Commitment to Senior Welfare
Beyond providing food assistance, the initiative reflects Bacolod City's continuing efforts to improve the welfare and quality of life of its senior citizens through responsive social programs. City officials also encouraged elderly residents to take advantage of services available at the newly established Senior Citizens Center, which offers programs and assistance tailored to their needs. Together with healthcare initiatives, financial assistance programs, and other community services, the rice distribution strengthens the city's broader commitment to building a more inclusive and caring community.
