DAVAO — The Book Nook Davao City Library hit the road this August, joining the nationwide Brigada Eskwela to share the joy of reading with students. Through its mobile libraries, the city brought books and interactive learning directly to schools preparing for the 2026 academic year.
A Mission Built on Bayanihan
The initiative aligned with this year's Brigada Eskwela theme, "Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman." The Book Nook team visited various schools, promoting a love for reading ahead of class openings. Their mobile libraries served as moving classrooms, bringing resources to students who might not otherwise have access.
The effort goes beyond simple book lending. Mobile visits include storytelling sessions, arts and crafts activities, and many more. This holistic approach enriches the learning experience and builds community resilience.
Reaching Every Corner of the City
The Davao City Library and Information Center (DCLIC) deployed its specialized mobile library buses to far-flung barangays. This ensures that students in rural areas receive the same access to reading materials as those in the city center. The program actively bridges the learning gap between urban and remote communities.
These mobile libraries are a vital tool for democratizing knowledge. They carry books authored by Filipinos that reflect local culture and languages. This focus on local content helps children see themselves in the stories they read, making literature more relatable and engaging.
The BOOKod Tangi Movement
The Book Nook Davao is part of a larger national initiative by the National Book Development Board (NBDB). The project aims to establish community reading spaces across the country. The NBDB created Book Nooks to combat declining readership and make libraries welcoming for everyone.
The national movement is celebrated through the BOOKod Tangi: The Book Nook Project Online Assembly, scheduled for August 13–14 and 20–21, 2026. This virtual gathering unites Book Nook sites and volunteers nationwide. The #KuwentongBOOKodTangi campaign encourages communities to share their unique stories about their reading hubs and volunteer experiences.
Cultivating a Love for Reading
At its core, the program seeks to cultivate literacy and a genuine love for books among Filipino youth. It challenges the outdated notion that libraries are only for the privileged. By making reading fun and accessible, the initiative inspires young minds to explore new worlds and ideas.
The partnership between DCLIC and NBDB demonstrates a strong commitment to education. It shows that libraries can be dynamic, inclusive, and deeply connected to their communities. The Brigada Eskwela participation is just one chapter in this ongoing story of promoting learning.
