CAVITE, Philippines — Following recent heavy rains and widespread flooding, the Department of Health (DOH) has issued a critical warning to the public: do not wait for symptoms or a visible open wound before seeking medical evaluation if you have walked through floodwaters. Health experts are debunking the common misconception that Leptospira bacteria can only infect individuals with obvious cuts or gashes, emphasizing that the reality is far more dangerous.
The Invisible Entryways
According to the DOH, the microscopic bacteria—shed primarily through the urine of infected animals like rats—can effortlessly find a way into your bloodstream. Even if your skin appears perfectly intact, the contaminated floodwater can transmit the infection through the eyes, nose, and mouth, as well as microscopic skin tears or abrasions that are completely invisible to the naked eye. Because of this high rate of transmission, health officials emphasize that anyone who wades into dirty water faces an immediate risk of contracting leptospirosis.
Act Fast: Free Medical Aid at YAKAP Clinics
If you have been exposed to floodwaters, the DOH advises visiting your nearest health center or PhilHealth YAKAP Clinic within 24 to 48 hours. Formerly known as the KonSulTa program, PhilHealth YAKAP Clinics provide free medical consultations, essential diagnostic check-ups, and covered prescription medicines. Visiting these clinics will determine whether you need an immediate dose of doxycycline prophylaxis—a preventive antibiotic treatment that can stop the infection before it takes hold of your body.
Red Flags: Watch for These Symptoms
Leptospirosis can escalate quickly into life-threatening organ failure if left ignored. Seek emergency care immediately if you experience any of the following post-exposure symptoms: high fever accompanied by chills; severe headache and deep muscle pain, particularly in the calves and lower back; redness or yellowing of the eyes; and jaundice or a yellowish tint on the skin.
A Strict Warning Against Self-Medication
While doxycycline is highly effective at preventing severe illness, the DOH strongly warns against taking it without a doctor's clear prescription. Doxycycline is potentially harmful to specific vulnerable populations and is strictly prohibited for use by pregnant individuals, lactating or breastfeeding mothers, and children aged 8 years old and below. Protect your family by avoiding floodwaters entirely whenever possible. If exposure is unavoidable, gear up with protective rubber boots, wash thoroughly with soap and clean water immediately afterward, and prioritize a medical consultation to stay ahead of the disease.
